Twenty seconds is the handwashing time health agencies recommend, and it is also the work interval in a classic Tabata round. This timer gives you a big shrinking ring and digits that kids can follow, then sounds a chime at zero. Start it, scrub or work until the ring is empty, and you are done.

Ways to use this timer

  • Teaching kids to wash their hands for the full 20 seconds
  • A single Tabata-style work burst, such as squat jumps
  • Short timed answers in a classroom warm-up

Questions

Can this timer run a full Tabata workout?

This page times one 20 second block. For eight rounds of 20 seconds work and 10 seconds rest with cues, use the interval timer, which defaults to that Tabata pattern.

Is 20 seconds really enough for handwashing?

It is the commonly recommended minimum for a thorough wash with soap, covering palms, backs of hands, between fingers and under nails.
